Anime Boys Easy to Draw Powerful
It's easy for an anime novice to mistake the craft as nothing more than a show of brute force. That's because so much of the lore surrounding anime is related to the action-shonen genre that many of its most profitable programs belong to.
What the novice might not understand is that there is a lot of anime out there that delve into the psychology of the human mind, as well as some deep scientific themes that are far above the average Saturday morning cartoon's pay grade. This is a list of 15 characters that embody those themes: the kind that make you think as well as make you feel.
Updated on July 12th, 2021 by Kit Morris:There are many genius characters in anime, and though the original ten that were featured on this list are incredibly brilliant, there are some other masterminds that unfortunately were not in this article when it was originally written. Because of that, there are now fifteen characters that can outsmart just about anyone that anime fans should know about.
15 Vash the Stampede (Trigun)
Starting off this list is somebody who's just as intelligent as he is lucky. Viewers know from the first episode ofTrigunexactly who Vash is, and if it weren't for Vash's ability to think on his feet, his identity would have been outed immediately and we would have gotten no second episode.
Vash is a master at manipulating his character, generally projecting an energy that couldn't possibly belong to such a notorious criminal. That may not showcase intelligence in the way most of us think of it, but it takes a powerful brain to effectively manipulate everyone around you, so Vash no doubt belongs on this list.
14 Ray (The Promised Neverland)
Unlike most people, Ray never lost the memories he had when he was an infant. Because of that, he knew that the orphanage he lived in was actually a farm that demons used to raise children until they were 12 years old, before eating them.
Ray dedicated his entire life to rescuing his closest friends from Grace Field House during The Promised Neverland, planning his every move for years and figuring out how to escape. Without him, all of the children he called his family would have died.
Working-class crafters often go overlooked for their ability to put together complex parts into a fully functional whole. Winry Rockbell ofFullmetal Alchemistfame is a next level craftsperson who deserves more respect, specifically on lists ranking intelligent anime characters much like this one.
She knows the ins and outs of automail, as evidenced by her understanding of Ed's arm when the two first reconnect. When it comes to gears and the people who wear them on their body, there aren't many engineers that can take care of you better than Winry.
12 Bulma Brief (Dragon Ball)
What can be said about Bulma that hasn't already? She's one of the most iconic smart people in the history of anime and held the title long before the anime boom (at least if you're going off of Japanese air dates.)
Since her introduction, Bulma has always come through with a new invention that always conveniently helps the situation. In the case of the now non-canon Blutz Wave Ray, she's sometimes more hurt than helped, but evil geniuses are still geniuses, right?
11 Conan Edogawa (Detective Conan)
A list of intelligent characters wouldn't be complete without a master detective. The protagonist of theDetective Conanseries isn't just any kid detective, though. As viewers know, he's actually imbued with all the powers of an adult detective because that's basically what he is. He simply got turned into a kid.
This doesn't just mean that he can solve kid-level mysteries better because he has adult experience either. He's actually really great at solving all mysteries, he's just smaller than most detectives who can solve the same kinds of mysteries.
10 Armin Arlert (Attack On Titan)
While he isn't as physically strong as his comrades, Armin Arlert is the smartest character inAttack on Titan. It's very rare that he doesn't have a plan whenever the Survey Corps are on a mission, and his friends often look at him as their leader.
If it weren't for Armin, the identities of the Female, Colossal, and Armored Titans never would have been revealed, nor would the Survey Corps have been able to defeat them.
9 Tenya Iida (My Hero Academia)
Where somebody like Vash the Stampede is great at improvising when things go wrong, MHA's Tenya Iida is a master at planning so he'll never have to. Taking into account his age, he's an incredibly resourceful hero hindered only by his own self-doubt.
With more confidence, his brains and might could easily allow him to exceed his brother, Tensei, as an Engine hero. Until then, his training at UA High will shape him into a better man, hopefully preparing him for such a responsibility one day.
8 Norman (The Promised Neverland)
Further proving how much brains there is among the young cast of The Promised Neverland, the only child from Grace Field House that's smarter than Ray is Norman. Once he learned about the demons outside of the orphanage, he was shipped out and thought that he would die.
Because of this, he came up with a plan, predicting everything that would happen in the weeks before the next child would be shipped. After telling his plan to Emma, she made sure that it would work, and Norman was able to save his family just by using his mind.
7 Madara Uchiha (Naruto)
Madara is easily the greatest tactician in Naruto lore, plain and simple. Given the rules of the Naruto Universe, it isn't easy to come back from death, but Madara managed it. He's a master of several Jutsu and a voice that can call together armies.
Pretty much any way somebody can be intelligent in a way that totally screws over everybody else, Madara is that. Beyond that, he had the freedom of living life on his own terms, ultimately dying only when he willed it: not being killed like many other villains in anime history.
6 Zen-Oh (Dragon Ball)
Though he may not always show it, Zen-Oh is incredibly smart. The only reason he isn't topping this list is that his naivety often keeps him from using what he knows to the best of his ability.
Zen-Oh in most ways acts like a selfish child, but he's also capable of great things and seems to be able to comprehend the subtleties of all 12 Dragon Ball Universes, which isn't an easy thing to do. Even Whis, who himself is a pretty intelligent figure, doesn't have the knowledge, let alone the power of Zen-Oh.
5 Senku Ishigami (Dr. Stone)
Senku is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to the world of science in Dr. Stone. Where somebody like Bulma Brief focuses mainly on tech, Senku can do just about anything under the sun that's taught across the land.
Beyond the amount of things he knows is his ability to draw complex conclusions from new information. Intelligence, after all, isn't just what you know, but how you think. He's even not too bad as a strategist, leading the charge against Tsukasa and other threats in Stone World.
4 L (Death Note)
L is the greatest detective in the world fromDeath Note. He solved many cases over the years, beginning his career at a very young age. The only case that ever truly challenged him was the Kira Investigation.
He quickly discovered that Kira was in Japan. From there, he began working with a task force there, which lead him to figure out that Kira was Light Yagami. However, it was hard for him to prove this, which resulted in him and Light having one of the best rivalries in all of anime.
3 Korosensei (Assassination Classroom)
It takes a special kind of genius to see the way that humans are failing students who don't fit the mold, then strong-arm them into letting you take over by posing as a hostile force who will destroy the world if you aren't allowed to help these damn kids.
That's exactly what Korosensei did. His plan was as beautiful as it was layered, hitting Assassination Classroom fans hard as they watched it unfold through subtle comments and actions that became more overt throughout the series' two seasons.
2 Dio Brando (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)
Honestly, this list could get by consisting only ofJojo's Bizarre Adventurevillains. The opposition in this series is incredibly creative and equally malicious, much to the credit of the property's creator.
Easily the most tactful of any Jojo villain, Dio's incredible creativity is what allowed him to be such an enduring threat to the Joestar family. For this reason, he takes the penultimate spot on this list.
1 Light Yagami (Death Note)
In anybody else's hands, the user of a Death Note would have been identified and caught pretty damn quickly. Light was able to go on killing for years, despite L being smart enough to confirm that he was in Japan.
It was only by a combination of his hubris and going up against several others that were similarly talented that he was defeated and died the same way his victims were. Regardless, it's clear that no other person in that world could have caused as much damage if they were given the same tools.
